Sustainability
Engineered from a renewable resource
Kronospan OSB is manufactured in accordance with responsible forestry and sustainable raw material principles. Kronospan Luxembourg has introduced recycled wood into the OSB production process for the first time, placing circular economy at the heart of manufacturing.
Recycled wood comes first
Every board starts with a sourcing hierarchy that keeps wood in use for as long as possible — circular economy before virgin timber.

Why wood-based OSB
Renewable Resource
Timber from sustainably managed forests with controlled harvesting and regrowth. Manufacturing maximizes resource efficiency by prioritizing recycled wood and sawmill residues.
Low Embodied Energy
OSB requires significantly lower embodied energy compared to steel or concrete during production. The manufacturing process is optimized for energy efficiency while delivering high mechanical performance.
Carbon Storage
Trees absorb CO₂ during growth, and this carbon remains locked in wood fibers throughout the OSB panel's life. On average, every cubic meter of wood stores approximately one ton of CO₂.
Minimal Waste
Bark, chips, sawdust, and by-products from processing are reused in wood-based products or as bioenergy — supporting circular economy principles.
OSB Next Generation
Recycled wood, at scale
At the Sanem plant in Luxembourg, Kronospan has introduced recycled wood into OSB production for the first time — putting the circular economy at the heart of manufacturing while keeping the structural performance of OSB/3.

Low-emission by class
Boards are declared to formaldehyde emission class E1 under EN 13986 / EN 717-1 — suitable for interior use.
Formaldehyde-free option
OSB 3 produced in Jihlava uses a formaldehyde-free (FF) resin — EU class E0, US NAF (no added formaldehyde).
Healthy visible surfaces
OSB M1 is made from selected spruce with low-emission binders for visible interior surfaces and furniture.
The evidence
Declarations of Performance, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and certificates are available per product and producing plant. Detailed life-cycle figures — embodied energy and kg CO₂e per m³ — are published in the product EPDs rather than estimated here.
